Chapter Nineteen: What If She Thinks Criminals Are Gross?

Last time, Mikey had a not-so-great date and invited over Cory Farrar and two of the Brewsters, Latrice and her dad Ruben. When we left off Cory had abandoned them and Mikey and Mikey and the Brewsters were just about to do anything else but stand around awkwardly.

They hang out at Azalea Acres Community Garden. Ruben and Latrice go sit on a bench, but Mikey stays near the entrance. Notice who's staring longingly.

And now we reach the root of the problem. Mikey is scared to get close to Latrice because of his future!
Mikey: What if she thinks criminals are gross?!

Apparently he's arguing with himself over this.
Latrice is...concerned.

A few minutes later, the group decides to be studious together. Maybe as a distraction from the awkwardness of no interaction.

Since Megan rejected him before, and he still wants to go swimming, I have Gee meet up with Cherry at the swimming pool. She looks happy to see him, so we're good so far.

Instead of yelling like last time, Cherry just talks to Gee about desserts. It's a nice start.

Look at these two, still so in love. Which makes everything so much harder.
By the way, that shot of Gee's face while hugging Cherry is our 1000th one! Yay!

Meanwhile, Mikey is hiding out in the bathroom so that he doesn't have to speak to Latrice. Really, Mikey?

And then he wants to pout because they're reading without him.

Mikey: NOW I'm ready to talk to her. What gives?
*facepalm*

So he sits on a bench across the garden, all gloomy.

Felecia (Sameh's mom): Ugh, what's up with that Way kid? Why's he gotta be all emo? Sitting in the dark like that...
Ruben: *groaning whale noises*
Well, at least he's standing up for Mikey? Sort of?

A few minutes later, Latrice leaves, sighing wearily. Just look at that face! I just wanna squeeze her. He'll get over his fear soon. :(

Ruben soon follows after he tells Felecia off. Such is the sad end of Mikey's outing.

Mikey: Is there something wrong with my face?
No, hun, not at all. Just your personality.

Hey! I found Megan across town. She's sitting with Larry Cooper, who's apparently having evil thoughts about children. That...sounded better in my head.

Cassandra Riley interrupts Mikey's moping with questions about his day. Aw, that was sweet. Mikey immediately wishes to become friends with her because of it. You know what that means: she's either a criminal herself or connected to one.

Gee excuses himself to the bathroom. I'm wondering if he just needed to get away. They both seem far too happy. Like, fake-happy.

Cherry decides to go swimming.
Cherry: Just leave me to die...

Then... IT HAPPENS.
YES. YES MIKEY WOULD.
Mikey: But--
YOU'RE GOING.

Gee, I guess, is getting a feel for what it's like to be an elder. He's reclining in a lawn chair and sharing complaints with an elder, Elaine Joy.
It's after curfew, so as soon as I learn where Latrice wants Mikey to meet her, I'm sure to send Gee and Cherry over there so Mikey doesn't get arrested.

Apparently everyone loves the Stadium 'cause it's where Latrice invites him. Dara and Jasmin are the chaperones this time.

When Mikey shows up, Latrice is already doing her homework, so Mikey joins her. Behind her. And far away. Oh, Mikey...

When he finishes, he gets up and awkwardly waves at her. Mikey is my spirit animal.

GO MIKEY GO!

Gee: *shows up without Cherry, then immediately sighs*
Uh-oh. Is that a good or bad sigh?

IT'S A BAD SIGH. I REPEAT, IT'S A BAD SIGH. NO, GEE! STAY BACK!

NO GEE NO

Latrice is unperturbed, even though Gee just insulted her mother right in front of her.

Then Mikey has absolutely no chill and flirts with Latrice right in front of Gee. Right on, Mikey!

Dara: Get 'em, girl!
Dara approves.

But when Gee's turned away, Mikey makes it clear just how he feels. Wow. Look at that face...

After Mikey leaves a few minutes later, the moment ruined, Gee tries to talk to Latrice about his upcoming eventual maybe-soonish wedding. But she's having none of it.

Then he tries again, because Gee is bad at learning.

Back home, Mikey is punishing himself by shoving a dirty plate into his shoulder. Yikes! Also, I don't think your arm or hand is supposed to go that way, Mikey.

Uh-oh. Another freak-out. Perhaps it's because he realizes his birthday is today.
Mikey: Please no clowns...
Gee, what did you put this child through?
